Though about an hour’s drive inland from Lake Michigan, Grand Rapids in Kent County serves as the commercial and cultural center of Michigan’s West Coast region, which includes the nearby coastal towns and beaches of Holland, Grand Haven and Muskegon. Grand Rapids is named for the rapids of Grand River, the largest river in Michigan, where Coho salmon still fight their way upstream past the banks that originally were home to the Ottawa Indians and fur traders. Once a regional furniture capital, due to the surrounding dense pine forests, Grand Rapids has acquired a first rate symphony, opera and theatre company, fine restaurants, a zoo, historical museums and other major urban features without losing touch with its natural roots. The birthplace of President Gerald R. Ford, Grand Rapids’ Ford Museum holds many rare and interesting American artifacts, including many pieces from the Lincoln presidency.
